Tax Preparation

VITA2024-20251 (PDF)

At the beginning of every school year, I challenge my Accounting students to either meet or beat the amount of tax returns that were completed by the previous year's class.  Last year's class made a quantum leap and finished 723 tax returns.  I really didn't know if it would be surpassed but this year's group of students really stepped up and met the challenge.  This year 1,072 tax returns and quality reviews were completed by DHS Accounting students.  For the second year in a row the students joined the "Million Dollar Club" with a new record of $1,233,306 in tax refunds that were processed and put back into the pockets of local taxpayers!

DHS has a partnership with CSET (Community Services Employment Training) and all Accounting students went through 3 weeks of tax training through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program where they earned 3 IRS certifications for preparing tax returns for others. The VITA program, sponsored by the IRS, offers free tax help to low-income taxpayers, people with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. During the months of February, March and April my classroom was turned into a tax preparation center Monday - Thursday for a few hours after school. Many of the returns that were filed by students were delivered to us from other CSET offices in Porterville, Visalia, Tulare, and Pixley.  This year there were 32 students who participated in the VITA program that could commit to staying after school and preparing tax returns, and 19 of those students (in red font in table below) committed 25+ hours and will be recognized at tonight's school board meeting along with earning a $500 scholarship from grant money that was secured by CSET.  This has been a great partnership that allows students to learn real-life job skills and be able to give back to their community at the same time - a true win-win.

You might have noticed some of these students wearing their VITA shirts on campus this spring.  Be sure to congratulate them if you have them in class on a job well done
